Posted by admin on March 21, 2011

Music therapy is the use of music to improve or maintain ones physical, mental, social, and emotional health. It is used in many different settings, ranging from hospitals to nursing homes to schools to psychiatric hospitals. As a well person, it may be possible to create your own music therapy at home to help you relax and/or to sleep better.
Music therapy is provided by professional music therapists. They work with adults as well as with children. Music therapy can help improve memory, reduce stress, provide an outlet for feelings, and calm the mind and body. There is research that supports music as a therapy and as a stress reducer. It has been used in operating rooms to improve the outcome of surgery, with patients after surgery to reduce pain and help in pain management, with children to help them communicate better and to help teach them to express themselves better, and with Alzheimer’s patients to aid in their treatment. Music therapy is also used to motivate patients to engage in physical rehabilitation.
Music therapy has been shown to change the patient’s brainwaves, breathing, heart rate and mental alertness and focus. It is commonly used in adults and children with various disabilities. This therapy may consist of the patient listening to music, composing music, writing lyrics to music, adapting music to the individual, dancing, and singing to the music. Sometimes the composing is done by the music therapist, while other times it is done by the patient. With music therapy, it is not necessary for the patient to be musically inclined, as there are many modalities of music therapy that can be used. The therapist tailors the therapy to each individual patient’s needs. This therapy is recognized by and many times reimbursed by insurance companies.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards formed a songwriting partnership early in their careers, both crediting manager Andrew Loog Oldham as the one to give them the push they needed to begin their years-long collaboration. Some of these songs include the hits “Get Off of My Cloud,” “Wild Horses,” and “Beast of Burden.”

The original band consisted of Brian Jones, instrumentalist, pianist Ian Stewart, bassist Bill Wyman, drummer Charlie Watts, with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on vocals. Jagger and Richards eventually took over leadership of the band as Jones became increasingly unable to function. He died in 1969. Mick Taylor replaced Jones just prior to his death, but left the band in 1974. He was then replaced by Ronnie Wood who is still with the band. Wyman quit the band in 1992 and was replaced in 1994 by Darryl Jones, though he is not officially a band member.
